Actor's robe

Actor's (?) robe of green satin with enormous, wide sleeves, embroidered in satin, couched, and loop stitch. There are ten medallions, two on each sleeve, containing five-clawed dragons in coarse gold thread. In the field loose clouds, bats, Buddhist and Taoist emblems. Conventional border with peonies and butterflies in loop stitch scattered over striped area; a single row of tight clouds; rolling waves with swastika. Lining of coarse pink cotton. Note This robe may have been used to clothe an image. Workmanship coarse.
