Carpet

Carpet of Kang Hsi blue cut velvet with large peony blossoms, twining leaves, and bats in gold and shades of coral and soft green. Three borders, the inner and outer ones of Greek key meander; the central one of running lotus and leaf design. Binding of deep blue satin. Lining of yellow raw silk. Velvet badly worn at one end in central panel. The two lengthwise strips, sewn together, may once have been outer strips of a three width carpet. In conjunction with 'The Art of Japanese Screen Painting' MIA,October 21,1984-January 1,1985, described as silk,velvet pattern on plain weave ground.
